A woman meticulously plans a murder. A boy learns how to fly. A bird-watcher meets a rook. Poor fat Gwen is viewed by 255,899 people on a porn site. A pair of shoes lead a young playboy into peril.

Such themes stalk the pages of this anthology of short stories, where the dark alleyways are, by turns, troubling and absorbing, touching and funny. Fresh and various in their many voices, these dark tales grate across a human fragility where, in the end, some redemption may be found.
